The Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched in 1977, contained a message recorded on vinyl discs in the hope that advanced space-faring civilizations would one day find them and respond. The message included general information about Earth and its diverse life forms, human civilization and culture.

A UFO website, The Sheivae Project, now claims that NASA secretly received an audio recording containing an alien reply to its 1977 VGR message in 2012, but has kept the information hidden from the public. However, a NASA whistleblower leaked a copy of the recording before he died.

The recording of an alien voice, claimed to be an effort by aliens to reproduce human speech artificially, begins with bleeping noises followed by a synthetic human voice that says, “Hello. I am Sheivae. I receive your message. I come from world far ways from yours. You are not alone. I hope you receive mine. I hope you understand my message.

By popular request, I did my next case review on the famous UFO landing in Voronezh, Russia. The story is spectacular in its own right, and I tried to do it justice in my retelling, but I've also chosen to use it as another example of the way in which modern encounters with "aliens" resemble centuries-old encounters with fairies and goblins and the like. Here I've tried to compare the being's paralyzing tube with the fairy wands and other hand-held devices of supposedly mythical peoples. Coincidence?
